![]() Future marathons should try to get more attention from gaming communities that don't really know speedrunning, but could get interested at this time of the year. And I think some steps have been made to appeal to a broader audience by bringing Tetris runs and Super Mario Maker blind runs. Also, the esports scene, which is massive on Twitch, doesn't really notice AGDQ even though the set of gaming skills is the same. ("we esports now" guys, get out) That's whole communities that could be gathered even for a small time. I didn't see many of them mention AGDQ even though it's the biggest non-esports stream of the year. Even something like a very risky trick that is not really done in runs could bring additional donations if it's proposed as an incentive.ĭo other big streams know AGDQ? I talk about the ones that get like 5 to 20k viewers each time they stream. And most runners usually forget this part, resulting in many runs that don't have any incentives, even though they could. There's a flaw in this system - there can be ideas for incentives in a run application, however, they have to be confirmed on the SDA forum to be in the marathon. Mad Catz offered some prizes and that's quite good, but it could be way better by contacting other companies.Ī potential lack of donation incentives. I think there would definitely be some room for a grand prize every day, and a super prize for the whole marathon, if the organizers did more efforts in order to get prizes from a broader community and the gaming industry. Prizes mostly rely on a small community - and even if they can bring something big sometimes, in a large part of the runs, there's nothing to bring more donations than "just" the charity itself. Pretty sure that some communities, third parties and even publishers/devs would donate some prizes for a great cause. But let's be honest - for a fundraiser that big, having such an unnoticed way to send prizes is quite a bummer. ![]() What kind of stuff AGDQ has to offer? Mostly perlers and small stuff that the members of the SDA community donate, alongside some bigger prizes and little things offered by sponsors. There's tons of prizes to grab at any time of the marathon. DBFH manages to get unique stuff from third parties, publishers and developers. When we compare it to another big yearly fundraiser, Desert Bus For Hope, the lack of interesting prizes is kinda crippling. I think that's the main problem of GDQ marathons. I don't really know why the partnership hasn't been done again, but that's a boost in donations that AGDQ 2016 won't get after it ends.Ī lack of great prizes all along the marathon. This one added nearly $220,000 in donations after the marathon ended. I think there might be things that could explain, if it happens at the end of the marathon, a decrease in donations:įirst of all, no Humble Bundle. But if some efforts have been made to raise more money for charity, and the streaming and speedrunning scene is more and more popular, why do we see this decrease? I understand fully that this marathon is mostly about fun and celebration of gaming, and chasing for donations might not be the right thing. ![]() Even though the success of the event might be definitely uncontested (as raising over a million for charity is nonetheless a worldwide success), having a decrease in donations right now would be a bit of a bummer. Well, we all know that this thing would happen someday, but well, Twitch gets even more popular every year, and the speedrunning scene that broadens month after month. So this year could mark a decrease, for the first time in 6 years of existence. ![]() And I think the best is yet to come.īut right now, AGDQ 2016 is trailing $90k behind AGDQ 2015 at the same point (source: Alligatr AGDQ 2015 and AGDQ 2016.) Which is kinda surprising, as every marathon so far raised the bar over and over. To potential downvoters: first of all, this is definitely not a criticism towards the event because it has been spectacular and phenomenal so far. ![]()
